I love reading books about people overcoming their obstacles. Even if it's fiction, it makes me take a good, hard look at my life and wonder how I would react in those situations and it helps me put my struggles in perspective, focusing on what really matters. The characters in "The Secret Life of Bees", by Sue Monk Kidd, were more than just survivors. They were conquerors of their circumstances and time (the south in 1964). Lily lost her mother at a young age and her father was not a positive influence in her life. Lily and her black nanny, Rosaleen, ran away to a place that Lily believed would reveal more about her mother and hopefully be a safe place for them to take refuge. They met many women that became their family. Click on the picture below and read more about this book. Check it out today!

It's that time of year when many people set new goals. Why not set a reading goal too? When setting your reading goal, try to make it challenging, but attainable. It's important to consider the amount of time it takes for your school work, job, athletics, and any other responsibilities you may have. If you plan ahead, I think that you will find that you have some spare time that you can spend on reading for pleasure too. The cool thing about reading a book is that you will most likely learn something new, while also enjoying it! This year, my goal is to read 50 books.
